A selection of articles and peer-reviewed papers published by individual Council members. For peer-reviewed papers, articles, and reports from the Council as a whole, see our Publications area.

  • Council Contributing Member Bruce McEwen published a review article in the European Journal of Pharmacology (in press). The paper, "Central effects of stress hormones in health and disease: Understanding the protective and damaging effects of stress and stress mediators," provides a comprehensive background on the way that the brain and body adapt to acute and chronic stressors. McEwen discusses the role of the brain in determining when it perceives threats, as well as behavioral and physiological responses to stressful experiences and how the brain handles allostatic load and overload.
  • A presentation made by Council Member Pat Levitt was published in the article "Fetal Mechanisms in Neurodevelopmental Disorders," published in the March 2008 issue of Pediatric Neurology (Vol. 38, No. 3). Dr. Levitt's presentation took place at the Fetal Physiology Foundation's inaugural workshop, "Fetal Mechanisms in Neurodevelopmental Disorders." His comments focused on the potential variations in the timing and duration of development in the brain and how human experience can interact with individual genetics to modify the path of brain development.
  • Council Member Pat Levitt wrote the chapter “Building brain architecture and chemistry: a primer for policy makers”  in Nurturing Early Childhood Development: Evidence to Support a National Movement for Educational Change, edited by A. Tarlov. Palgrave Macmillan Press, New York (In press).
